Background
Born and raised in Southern California, Dr. Mike Amspoker developed an early and incurable fascination with the oceans and marine life. He earned a B.S. in Zoology from the University of California, Davis, a M.S. in Biology from San Diego State University, and a Ph.D. in Botany from Oregon State University. Dr. Amspoker continues to be enamored with marine and freshwater diatoms, a group of beautiful and ecologically significant microscopic algae. As part of his studies of diatoms that live attached to sand grain on beaches in Southern California, he has described two new genera and two new species.

In addition to the on-campus courses he teaches in the fields of general biology, botany, phycology, microbiology and ecology, Dr. Amspoker has taken over 230 Westminster students on a number of three-week summer session trips to Belize, Kenya, Peru and Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands.  His most recent trip to Belize took place in May 2017.
